Being an advocate for others is a hard job. I have a child with autism and my other child is neuro-typical. When my mother was sick I had to advocate for her daily as well…doctors, hospitals, and other facilities are not always for the patient.
These past few weeks have been rough trying to get into the rhythm of school with services in place, focus issues, me, and my own issues. The key thing for being an advocate is learning the system you have to advocate in. I am a nurse by trade so I could handle hospitals and facilities without much intervention from outside sources. But with IEP’s, special education, and my rights as a parent, yes the Law. I have been knee-deep into learning the who’s the what’s and the whys and why not. I have enclosed myself with people who have been through it and are going through the same things. I ask questions, lots of them. I call the teachers and supervisors. I get answers and then make sure that the answers are right for my child.
What I learn I teach. I am very much not afraid of learning and teaching what I know. I am a mother who has a child with autism and he is a gift. He thought me how to be more observant and to follow my gut when no believes me. He taught me how to push past the negative and see the positive side of all things. If I were to focus on his disability, I would never see all his abilities. His stubbornness is determination. His brilliance is hidden by his passiveness. His ability not to focus is his way of exploring everything at once.
I am not saying that every day is a good day… I get stressed out and upset and so does he. But looking from all Perspectives helps with understanding emotions and frustrations.
Where you see negative, I can now see positive. I see the best in the worst of them and I love people who are “flawed” in your eyes… With my sight, I see Perfection Imperfections and that makes the world so much more interesting for me.
Being Normal is Boring… That is my son’s motto and I hope it can be yours too.
