I was raised by a single parent and she did an awesome job, but she was not by herself. I had godparents, aunts, adoptive grandparents, and others who all had a hand in my development. Through the years we don’t forget them but we lose sight of them because we start dating, get married, have children, and stay focused on what we see in front of us. I am here challenging you again.
I went on Saturday to see my “grandmother” I had not to see her in like 10 years. Shameful on my part, I know but, I can’t make up for time lost. All I can do now is re-establish our bond. She was so happy to see me and my children that it made my guilty conscience fade away. I promised her that I would see her once a month. I will keep that promise however I can. Life is way too short.
I am not just my genes/DNA makeup. I am the makeup of my environment and the people who raised me. There is a part of my legacy that is ancestral. The people I never met but their spiritual intuition, purpose, push me to do what they intended. Like Oprah starting the school in Africa, not knowing that her ancestor tried that and failed. My ancestors were owners of land and businesses. My ancestors were trendsetters and a part of the slavery and big migration in the United States.
My environment of godparents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and “siblings” a circle of loving relationships that raised and nurtured me into the woman I am today. They taught me hard work, confidence, pride, love, faith, and survival. I appreciate everyone that was there for me. I appreciate all that they had a hand in my life. I would not be who I am without them all. My Village, Tani’s WORLD.
I challenge you to go back and say thank you.

I was raised by a single mom too but she also had her parents and siblings around when I was growing up. They all played a part in me and who I am.

This is such a nice gesture. It’s important to recognize the people who raised and what they did to help us become better human beings.

Thank you for reading. Yes it is important to not forget the people who raised us and educated us outside the class room.
